Current
Research
University of the Philippines:
Penablanca Prehistoric Archaeology Project
Surveys und excavations in the karstic limestone formations of the Penablanca, Cagayan Province, Northern Luzon.
The Mindoro Island Palaeolithic Survey
Surveys und site catchment in karstic limestone formations of Mindoro Occidental.
The Cagayan Valley Early Man Project
Surveys und site catchment in the fluviatile and pyroklastic sediments of the Plio-Pleistocene of the Cagayan River Basin, Cagayan and Isabela Province, N-Luzon.
Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle / University of the Philippines / University of Sheffield: Bladelet cores as spear points?
Technological, morphological and functional analysis of so-called “Burins de Vachons” from Les Vachons, in co-operation with Claire Gaillard, MNHN, Paris and Robert Dinnis, University of Sheffield.
University of Cologne, Institute of Pre- and Protohistory: Friesack-4
Microscopic use-wear and residue analysis and functional characterization of the lithic industries of the Mesolithic and Neolithic site of Friesack, Germany.Microscopic use-wear and residue analysis and functional characterization of the lithic industries of the Micoquien site Inden-Altdorf, Lower Rhine Valley.
The Palawan Island Palaeohistoric Research
Senior member and lithic analyst / microscopic use-wear analyst of a multi-disciplinary research project focused at the establishing of a secure time depth baseline for the presence of Homo sapiens and the attempt to recover evidence for the presence of Homo erectus in the island. These objectives will be embedded in the reconstruction of the island’s palaeoenvironment and put in relation to the cultural history of the whole Philippine archipelago.
Further Research
Arubo, General Tinio, Province Nueva Ecija, Central Luzon, Philippines
Archaeological survey, prospection and excavation of the Early Palaeolithic site Arubo. Analysis of the lithic assemblage. Research project and fieldschool of the University of the Philippines, Archaeological Studies Program. Supported by the Fritz-Thyssen-Foundation. Head of the project (2001-2004).
Research project "Die funktionale Gliederung von Siedlungsarealen im Neolithikum". A combined investigation about artefact distribution and microwear analysis in several Late Neolithic sites, mainly lake dwellings in the pre-Alpine region of Switzerland and Germany delivered first indications for the development of labour division and the beginning of complex social structures in the Neolithic. DFG-Postdoc Fellowship of the German Research Society
Participation in the excavation project of Kom al-Akhmar near Miniya in Middle Egypt. A village settlement since the Old Kingdom with layers of several Pharaonic periods and Early Christian habitation (Copts). Attached to it is a great nekropolis. Several surveys and explorations of the area are included in the project. Morphological, technological and typological analysis of the Old Kingdom stone artefacts, made from high quality flint. Expeditions to the raw material sources into Wadi al-Sheikh. Research project of the Institute for Egyptology at the University of Tübingen.
Recent microscopic analyses within excavation projects and research programs, e.g.
Henauhof-Nord II, a Late Mesolithic site near Lake Federsee, SW-Germany. Comparative analysis with Burgäschisee-Süd, Switzerland, a Neolithic lake dwelling of the Cortaillod culture. Identification of microscopic hafting traces and residues on lithic artefacts gave clues to the design and function of composite mesolithic hunting weapons and the origin and making of hafting mastics. Application of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays. Summary
Erkelenz-Kückhoven, Early Neolithic well, W-Germany. Oldest wooden building in Europe (Bandkeramik)
Dapangpergou, Republic of Togo. Rock shelter, Later Stone Age.
Kogelstein Rockshelter/cave site, SW-Germany. Middle Palaeolithic.
Ullafelsen, Fotschertal, Stubaier Alps, Austria. Early Mesolithic.
Bornheim-Sechtem, Rhein-Sieg Kreis, W-Germany. Early Bronze Age. First identified firemaking toolkit. Report
Fieldwork experience
Participation in excavations and surveys in Germany, Switzerland, Ireland, Egypt, Turkey, Oman, Yemen and the Philippines. Periods ranging from Lower Palaeolithic to the Mediaeval. Expertise in archaeological mapping and surveying with tilted theodolite, total station and Global Positioning System.
