I
talk more about fake than real intimacy. But I have
writers interacting with friends and customers in- and
outside the pages of their work, critics marrying readers,
etc.

area of research is Russian 'guitar poetry' (avtorskaia

(AP as an 'intimate chat', AP as a 'conversation among
friends') are extremely important.

cultural
anthropologist who has done work on consumption, class,
morality and gender in contemporary St. Petersburg. More
recently, I have begun a project on the Russian-American
matchmaking industry, with a particular interest in how
"sincere" and "strategic" motivations
for participation are constructed from both sides of this
transnational phenomenon. My interests seem to intersect
with yours insofar as I am hoping to better understand how
intimate emotional (love/marriage) relationships are
understood in contemporary Russia, in what terms they tend
to be discussed, how material interests are thought to
support or injure such relationships, and how these
discourses differ from those Americans tend to produce.

I
am working on a book about the literary and cultural
appropriation of Anna Akhmatova. The article concerns
letter-writing to Akhmatova in the 1950s and 1960s, and
looks specifically at the mutually constitutive processes of
appropriation by and of Akhmatova and her letter-writers.
This sub-group of readers effectively elides the distinction
between Akhmatova the historical person and her literary
personae. But rather than taking this conflation,
following Boym and others, as the graphomaniacal
oversimplification of uneducated readers, I view it as a
creative means by which these letter-writers project an
intimate space that subverts the state-sanctioned view of
reality. Their creative appropriation of Akhmatova allows
them to articulate a notion of the self that relies on an
imagined community grounded in aesthetic appreciation and
the valorization of feeling. This appropriation of
Akhmatova, in turn, contributes to the shape of her literary
reputation into the 1960s and beyond.

Das
Thema meiner Dissertation ist: „Körper/Raum-Überschreitung“
in der Prosa österreichischer Schriftstellerinnen
(Elfriede Jelineks, Mela Hartwig u.a.). In diesem Rahmen
beschäftige ich mich also auch mit Fragen über
Intimität bzw. die Dichotomie „Nähe vs.
Distanz“, sowohl auf thematischer als auch auf
narrativer Ebene.
